Grade 8 – High School Information

December 5, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

After the December break, Alta Vista teachers will be assisting grade 8 students with registration and option sheets for grade 9. We know that this is a new experience for many families, and we are here to help. Reading this information will help you prepare for January.

Students normally attend their “designated”  or “home” high school, and students have already been informed what their designated high school is. Many of our Alta Vista students will be attending Ridgemont in the fall. Should you move, you can obtain information about your child’s designate high school by going to the board’s homepage at http://www.ocdsb.ca, under the “Parent Portal” tab, choose “Secondary School Locator”.

Each student must complete an online option sheet for their designated high school. Students will be able to complete this at Alta Vista with the help of the Guidance teachers from their designated high school. Teachers will have made a recommendation as to the level for high school courses (academic/applied/essentials). Ms. Gibson (Learning Support Teacher) and/or your child’s homeroom teacher will be contacting parents of students who would benefit from special courses or specialized programs, to provide extra guidance.

We very much hope that you will plan to attend the applicable High School Parent Information Night(s).

Student Transfers

If parents/guardians would like a student to attend a school other than his or her designated school for the following school year, they must complete a SECONDARY SCHOOL TRANSFER FORM. This form is available at all secondary schools and through your homeroom teacher. It should be noted that this form is only available after the completion of online registration for the designated school.

The transfer form must then be taken to the receiving school (the high school to which you are applying for a transfer) during the transfer application period.  The student  transfer application period is between Monday, February 5 to Tuesday, February 20th, 2018. For more information, please check the board’s homepage, under the “Parent Portal”, scroll down to see the title “Quick Links”, then choose “Student Transfer”.

NB ** Each student must be registered online at his/her designated high school for a transfer application to be considered.

We trust that you will find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Guido Ronci, OCT   Christine McRae, OCT Lisa Gibson, OCT
